Raising the bar for Melbourne's Barristers workspaces

Barristers Chambers Limited (BCL) is a premium provider of offices and business support services for the Victorian Bar. BCL provides a range of chambers and desking solutions to lease to solicitors and barristers across several locations in Melbourne’s legal precinct, providing the ability to individualise their space to suit their requirements. Incorp were engaged to design and deliver a contemporary light and open space across two floors, inclusive of reception areas, individual offices, and shared/collaborative spaces.

With numerous other chambers in their network, BCL had a good idea of what they wanted us to achieve. The briefing process was highly collaborative, with engagement across a large group of stakeholders consisting of the internal BCL team and 55 barristers’ who would be occupying the space as the end users. The engagement ascertained specific requirements and further develop the design to accommodate their needs

The design of the chambers needed to accommodate a broad demographic of age, experience, individuals and practice groups, as well as various budget scales. It also included “Shared Spaces” which included a requirement of two meeting rooms, reception/secretary assistance, lounge / waiting, shower and kitchen/breakout spaces. Other key design criteria included security, acoustic considerations, lighting and mechanical ventilation.

A welcoming atmosphere was essential to ensure barristers’ clients would feel at ease during likely difficult experiences. Incorp included comfortable furnishings, greenery, natural lines and materials, curved edges, and soft curtains to create a sense of home and a calming flow around the environment.
